This article aims to draw attention to the activities of the institution of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (Polish acronym: KMPT), whose main goal is to eliminate the risk of torture or inhuman and degrading treatment of persons deprived of their liberty. The above goal is largely accomplished through the KMPT's visits to places of detention, which visits are preventive and unannounced. In this way, the KMPT's activities play an important role in the context of protecting the rights of persons deprived of their liberty, including in particular the prohibition of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
