The aim of this article is to compare the opinions of two French philosophers on the Polish institution of liberum veto with the traditional Polish perspective. Diplomat Michał Wielhorski, while in France as a representative of the Bar Confederation, established contact with Enlightenment philosophers Gabriel Bonnot de Mably and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He asked them to write original treatises on political reform and decided to create his own work as well. This resulted in three political treatises in which the authors expressed their views on the political system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, including the institution of liberum veto, analysing its advantages and disadvantages. They also proposed their recommendations for reforming the system. Their observations were aimed at modernising the legal system of the Commonwealth and improving its functioning. It is interesting to note that, despite declaring the same republican values, the authors had different views on possible changes, which were reflected in the way the reforms were carried out. Moreover, the fact that the luminaries of the Enlightenment dealt with the issue of the Polish political system shows that the legal system of the Commonwealth was important for the cultural heritage of Europe.
