Abstract
The article examines the evolution of the Catholic Church’s teaching on religious freedom and the protection of unborn life from apostolic times to the present. Grounded in natural law and Revelation, this teaching consistently condemns abortion, linking its rejection to religious freedom, understood as the right to live according to faith, and to freedom of conscience as an individual moral choice. Key stages are discussed: early Christian councils (Elvira, Ancyra, Trullo), medieval regulations (Decretales Gregorii IX), canon law codes (1917, 1983), and magisterial documents, including Casti Connubii, Humanae Vitae, Evangelium Vitae, Dignitas Personae, and Dignitas Infinita. Special focus is given to natural law as the doctrine’s foundation, the distinction between religious freedom and freedom of conscience, and the right to conscientious objection for medical personnel amid bioethical challenges and secularization.
