The crises of the Piast monarchy in the 11th and 12th centuries and attempts to overcome it. The media perspective on the problem

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the crises of the Piast monarchy in the 11th and 12th centuries from a historical and media perspective. On the one hand, the article focuses on the historical conditions under which the Piast state operated in the 11th and 12th centuries – the attempts to create a strong monarchy and the problems that the then princes and kings grappled with in attempting to overcome them. On the other hand, the author relates these to contemporary statehood crises and armed conflicts, pointing out the timelessness of these issues. Moreover he points that wars and economic or independence ambitions continue to shape the world in the 21st century, just as they did centuries ago. The author also points out that the crisis of the Piast monarchy in the 11th and 12th centuries is currently being presented in the media, and new hypotheses and interpretations continue to emerge regarding the actions taken by individual medieval rulers.
