Abstract

The issues surrounding peace have consistently occupied a central position in human thought. A novel conception of peace, was introduced by Christ, and subsequently elaborated upon by the apostles and early Church Fathers. The present article aims to examine the perspectives on this subject. It is structured in two parts. The first part analyses the views of the apostles and early Christian authors, beginning with Clement of Alexandria, continuing with Celsus, Tertullian, and Origen, and culminating with the reflections of St Augustine. The second part addresses the question of peace within the doctrine of the Catholic Church during the 20th and early 21st centuries, tracing developments from Pope Pius XI, through the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, to the contributions of Pope John Paul II.
