Boże macierzyństwo i wieczyste dziewictwo Maryi w polskich pieśniach bożonarodzeniowych

Abstract

Polish Christmas songs (carols), from the songbooks of Mioduszewski and Siedlecki, present the divine motherhood and Mary’s perpetual virginity in a theologically pure manner. They avoid naturalistic imagery and any content that might undermine dogmatic truths. They present Mary as the Mother of God – the Theotokos – accepting this mystery with the humility of faith. The motif of virginal motherhood present in the carols is realized through delicate, symbolic images: Mary gives birth to the Son while remaining a virgin, without compromising her purity. This truth is often emphasized in formulas such as “The Virgin gave birth to a Son” and “The Virgin gives birth to a King.” This is not a topic for explanation or discussion – it is a mystery accepted with the heart. The symbolic sphere of the songs evokes images of light, a womb as pure as crystal, and a spiritual “enclosed garden,” which indicates God’s intervention and the miracle of the Incarnation. Mary is perceived as the perfect vessel of grace – virginal and simultaneously maternal – in whom God took human flesh. The selected Christmas hymns cultivate liturgical and doctrinal accuracy, avoiding any excessive sensuality or folklorization of this mystery. These hymns serve as a sung catechesis, conveying the truths of faith with simplicity yet profound theological meaning.
