Abstract

The article addresses the problem of justifying the relationship between the dignity of the human person and the dignity of procreation, particularly in light of Donum vitae, which rejects the separation of procreation from the conjugal act. The aim of the article is to provide a deeper explanation of this relationship through an analysis of the nature of the conjugal act and the specificity of human procreation. It seeks to demonstrate that the moral evaluation of artificial reproductive technologies is grounded not only in doctrinal norms but also in the anthropological and metaphysical structure of the human person. The argument unfolds in four steps. First, the conjugal act is presented as an irreplaceable action understood as the “language of the body”. Second, its perfection is analyzed in terms of the unity of its meanings and the criteria of continuity and unity in the procreative process. Third, the interpersonal character of procreation is examined as an act of mutual self-gift that cannot be replaced by technical procedures. Finally, the article highlights the importance of origin and the relational structure of human existence. The conclusion argues that the dignity of procreation is inseparable from the metaphysical dignity of the person.
