
The Succession to the Crown Act, passed by the UK Parliament in 2013, significantly modified centuries-old regulations regarding the succession to the British throne. However, it maintained the rule of excluding Catholics from inheriting the throne, which had existed since the end of the 17th century. The article discusses the arguments put forward for maintaining such exclusion. Attempts were made to demonstrate that the ban on inheritance of the British throne by a person professing the Catholic faith is not only a historical anachronism contrary to freedom of religion, but also impractical, irrational and giving rise to further constitutional problems.
