As the teaching of religion aims to prepare students for responsible participation in an increasingly technologically advanced society, the question of whether and to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in this subject becomes relevant. In this context, this article has three main objectives. First, it will explain the concept of AI and how it functions. Second, it will provide examples of the possibilities and limitations of using AI in implementing three fundamental tasks in religious education in German schools: imparting structured and essential knowledge about Church faith, familiarising students with forms of spiritual practice, and fostering dialogue and critical thinking skills. Finally, it outlines four critical points largely derived from analysis, which address potential risks in using AI for teaching and learning religion: undermining student empowerment, reinforcing prejudices or discrimination through questionable data quality and AI training processes, data protection concerns, limited portability, and high costs associated with AI systems.
