Abstract
Alongside general forensic psychologists and other psychology experts operating in very narrow specific fields of expertise, the lists of expert witnesses maintained by the Regional Courts feature expert witnesses specialising in investigative psychology.
This paper outlines the scope of “investigative psychology”, as it is understood in worldwide scholarship and practice, examining its potential applications in the Polish criminal procedure, particularly in preliminary proceedings (as part of “investigative activities”), and its limited applicability in proceedings before the court.
It also discusses and provides a critical assessment of the places and level of investigative psychology currently pursued as a science in Poland, the current educational curricula in investigative psychology and, finally, the practice of employing expert witnesses from the field.
In addition, it expresses the hope that the future statute on expert witnesses will, at least partially, regulate the issue.
