In Moldovan and Transnistrian society, the Orthodox Church holds a majoritarian character and the Catholic Church there belongs to minority denominations. Legally speaking, the Republic of Moldova and the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic (commonly known as Transnistria) are secular bodies and the state and the Church are oficially separated. While the constitutions of both state bodies provide religious freedom, in practice, however, the administration does not always respect this right. The position of the Orthodox Church is privileged. The Orthodox Church enjoys a privileged status at the expense of the other religious communities.
