The development of the Constitution of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Elisabeth

Abstract

This article presents the history of the creation of the Constitution of the Sisters of St Elisabeth. Since the establishment of the Congregation of the Gray Sisters of St Elisabeth in Nysa in 1842, 82 years passed until the Constitution was finally approved by the Holy See in 1924. During this period, the process of shaping the Constitution of the Elisabethan Sisters crystallized. The first chapter discusses the primary Constitutions of 1844 and 1859. The topic of the second chapter is the ongoing evolution of the Constitutions in the years 1869, 1871, 1887, 1898, 1914. The development of the Constitutions in the years 1918-1975, their adaptation to the requirements of the Code of Canon Law and the necessity the revision of the Constitution after the Second Vatican Council is presented in the third chapter.
