
The order of the mayor of Warsaw reignited the discussion on the presence of crucifixes in public institutions. This article analyses this problem from the legal perspective with due account taken of the European standard (European Convention on Human Rights and European Union law) and of the national standard. The deliberations lead to a conclusion that Polish law contains provisions permitting religious symbols to be placed in public institutions. At the same time, public authorities, within their margin of appreciation, can place such symbols, as well as prohibit their placing.
