About the Journal

Magazine Publisher

“Sociological and Political Studies: New Series” is published by the University of Warsaw, and its publishing partner is Sedno Academic Publishing.

Journal's objective and thematic scope

The journal focuses on issues related to political power, the state, political systems, democracy and its threats, civil society, armed conflicts, migration, climate policies, and elections for public offices. While addressing global issues, we pay particular attention to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe—including from a comparative perspective. We examine the state of democracy in these countries, the condition of civil society, shifts in values within post-communist societies, and so on. We place particular emphasis on issues related to electoral behavior and electoral law.

The journal is open to a wide variety of academic circles and schools of social theory. We gladly welcome contributions from authors representing Poland’s vibrant community of political philosophers, qualitative researchers, as well as researchers who analyze the political sphere using formal models. We are open to both non-engaged sociology, free from value judgments, and to authors who systematically combine analyses of social reality with proposals for its transformation.

Specificity of the periodical

The journal draws on the postwar body of work in Polish social sciences. In particular, it highlights the contributions of scholars associated with Julian Hochfeld, including Zygmunt Bauman, Jerzy Wiatr, Włodzimierz Wesołowski, Maria Hirszowicz, Aleksandra Jasińska-Kania, and Adam Przeworski. Zygmunt Bauman served as chair of the Editorial Board of the revived journal until his death; Jerzy Wiatr currently holds this position.  Unlike many journals, “Sociological and Political Studies” accepts articles written in an essayistic style. It also provides opportunities for young scholars in the social sciences to make their debuts—thanks to an expanded peer-review process for articles by first-time authors and in-depth editorial work on these texts.

Journal History

The title of our journal directly references “Sociological and Political Studies”, published from 1957 to 1968 by Julian Hochfeld. Many outstanding sociologists made their debut in this highly influential journal and went on to become iconic figures in postwar Polish sociology. Among them were Zygmunt Bauman, Maria Hirszowicz, Włodzimierz Wesołowski, and Jerzy Wiatr.

In 2013, the Scientific Council of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Warsaw revived the journal under the title “Sociological and Political Studies. New Series” and appointed Prof. Jacek Raciborski as editor-in-chief. Prof. Zygmunt Bauman became the first chair of the Editorial Board. Following his death in 2016, the Board elected Prof. Jerzy Wiatr to this position—who was also a member of the editorial team of the ‘old’ “Studia”.
