Our Us: around problems of political identities

Abstract

The article opens with a review of the forms of social identificationand their connections to an individual’s personal identity. Different types of social identification– group-based, categorical, attributive, and with all humanity – differ not only in terms of how broadly others are perceived as „Us” and the degree of personal familiarity with members of that „Us”, but also in the complexity of cognitive processes shaping these identities. The authors show how the fusion of a social and individual identity can activate motivations for extreme, even extremist behaviors on behalf of one’s group.The authors focus on political identities, particularly the national identity. They emphasize the durability and strength of national identities in the contemporary world and highlight the diversity of criteria for belonging to a nation across European societies. These criteria are associated with differences in both perceptions of the in-group and relationships with out-groups. National narcissism – i.e. an overestimation of the importance of one’s own group – paradoxically coexists with the so-called victimhood identity, based on the belief in the exceptional suffering of one’s group, on fear, and distrust.

In the second part of the article, the authors analyze the emergence and the consolidation in Poland during the past two decades of two opposing political identities: pro-PiS and anti-PiS. These are total identities, referring to and resulting from the most significantpolitical conflictsin the Polish society, and they also encompass particular views of Europe and the world. They are only marginally shaped by material interests. These identities manifest most clearly in Poles’ voting behavior during parliamentary and presidential elections. Their social reach is nearly equal, resulting in the complete polarization of the political scene. The main elements of the pro-PiS identity include anti-elitism, traditionalism, and ethnic nationalism. The anti-PiS identity is characterized by pro-European attitudes, ideological liberalism, attachment to democracy, and fear of a PiS rule.
