Leadership amidst „radical uncertainty”.

Abstract

The growing generalized uncertainty of the world is accompanied by increasing leadership complexity. In the author’s empirical survey of top Polish leaders, it became clear that their role is much more defensive than it might seem to the recipients of the heroic myths and tales presented in the media. Leaders must overcome numerous and more substantial constraints to which they are constantly subjected. The constraints in question are political, cultural, a result of the formal scope of power and authority, informational, ethical, and emotional, and can also be the result of intrinsic motivation. Meanwhile, leaders are expected to have above-average results, which they achieve through their ability to mobilize followers. Informal leaders, representing dispersed leadership, often succeed. It occurs especially strongly in the face of a major threat (pandemic, war). Dispersed leadership has been observed by the author among technology startups, where the leadership roles shift seamlessly from one team member to another, depending on the task at hand.
