The aim of this article is to characterize the etiology of wars according to Herodotus of Halicarnassus. At the beginning of the article, the information contained in Prologue of The Histories was interpreted. Next the distinction between the expansive and the defensive wars is characterized. Then the relationship between the idea of imperialism and the concept of hybris is presented. The last part of the article shows that the protection of freedom among Greeks was de facto associated with the fight for the political hegemony in Ellas.
