Abstract

Jesus Christ entrusted the Church the teaching function. Therefore the Holy See has the right and the obligation to establish and support the ecclesiastical and catholic universities. In 1588 Pope Sixtus V erected the Congregation for the University of Roman Studies, which then took the name of the Congregation of Studies, the Holy Congregation of Seminaries and Universities, the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education, the Congregation of Seminaries and Institutes of Studies, the Congregation for Catholic Education (Institute of Studies). The Congregation consists of: cardinal prefect, secretary and undersecretary, consultors and other officials. The dicastery has competences in two diverse sectors: the Office for Universities and the Office for Catholic Schools. The Congregation for Catholic Education in particular: erects or approves ecclesiastical universities and faculties, approves the statutes and study programs of each ecclesiastical university or faculty, which must be drawn up in accordance with the apostolic constitution Veritatis gaudium, appoints or at least confirms the rector of the ecclesiastical university, the president of the ecclesiastical faculty sui iuris, the dean of the ecclesiastical faculty that forms part of a Catholic university or another kind of university.
