Concordats in the States of Central and Eastern Europe Concluded at the Turn of the 21st Century

Abstract

Systemic transformations, which involved a transition from communist totalitarianism to liberal democracy in the countries of Central-Eastern Europe, initiated in Poland in 1989, gave way to changes in the relationship between the State and Catholic Church and other confessional associations. It is clearly uniquely by the implementation of concordats, that is international agreements between the Holy See and the highest authorities of these states (Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Latvia, Slovenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, all German lands). The Author analyses freedom guarantees both for institutions and individuals, stipulated by the concordats.
