This text, based on the monograph “Marian Father Krzysztof Szwermicki: Apostle to the Siberian Exiles and His Irkutsk Parish” (Warsaw 2023), by Marian Father J. Kosmowski, clarifies erroneous accounts regarding the commissioning of a statue of the Virgin Mary in the Sayan Mountains in Siberia by the Irkutsk parish priest, Father Szwermicki, with the aim of providing religious support to the Polish exiles. This turned out to be a legendary tale, likely based on the fact that the owner of the graphite mine on Mount Botogol in the Sayan Mountains, the
Frenchman J.P. Alibert, donated an icon of Our Lady of [Good] Hope to the church in Irkutsk (around 1860).
