Abstract

In the difficult situation of the Kingdom of Poland, dependent on the Russian partitioner, in the second half of the 19th century, thanks to the revival of the Warsaw religious community and activities of fraternities: of mercy, of rosary and Franciscan, in 1858 a charity for women was established under the name of “the Shelter” (Przytulisko). Despite the efforts of the secular management of the institution and the financial contribution of the members of fraternities, the functioning of the institution required the constant presence of people concerned about its daily existence. Hence, efforts were made to place the institution under the care of a religious congregation, including Sisters Servants from Greater Poland, as well as the Felician Sisters from Warsaw. Following unsuccessful attempts, after the dissolution of religious convents in 1864, in the 1880’s, in the underground conditions, an attempt was made – inspired by Fr. Honorat Koźmiński, OFMCap – to create a new non-habit-wearing congregation in “the Shelter”. For this purpose, the management of the institution was taken over by Kazimiera Gruszczyńska, a member of the first hidden Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus created in the 1870’s. During the organization of the religious community she encountered many difficulties, both on the part of the board of “the Shelter”, unaware of her intention, as well as because of her membership in another congregation. Her attitude, organizational skills and resourcefulness in management gained her the trust of the board and greater freedom in action. After initiating certain members of the board in her plans, a new religious congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Suffering was formed there. Thanks to the patriotic and religious attitude of the members of the management board of “the Shelter” and the friendly doctors in Warsaw appreciating the work of the sisters among the sick, the Society for Care of the Sick was created, identical with the congregation, which made it possible for the new congregation to exist under contemporary law and government authorities.
