Abstract

In a manuscript dated 1727, titled "Diary of the General Visit of the Catholic Church in Königsberg", the Illuminated Prince, Bishop of Warmia and Sambia, Krzysztof Szembek of Słupowo, reports his solemn church visit. This manuscript was sent from Warmia to the president and the city council of Krakow. It is kept in the Provincial State Archives in Kraków as part of a set of handwritten manuscripts from 1715–1786. The author of the manuscript describes in detail the ten-day visit of the church in Königsberg by Bishop Krzysztof Jan Szembek, not limiting himself only to laconic mentions, but taking into account even the smallest details. Sending this diary to Krakow suggests that the author was aware that it would be of interest to the Krakow city council. The Warmian diocese was unique in Poland due to its privileges, which sometimes led to disputes with the Polish king. Warmian bishops, in addition to their church functions, also had secular power and owned significant land estates. The episcopal visit was an important event for the diocese, which at that time was going through turbulent times associated with various conflicts and changes of rulers. Bishop Szembek conducted a pastoral visitation, which was part of his duties from the moment he took over the Warmian diocese in 1724. An account of this visit was edited in 1727 and sent to Krakow. The person of Bishop Szembek and the situation in Warmia and Królewiec were the key elements of this diary. The author, who remained anonymous, was aware that the account of the visit would be of interest to the recipients, which suggests accuracy and care in the description.
