Abstract

Georg Schwengel (1697-1766), prior of the Carthusian monastery in Gdańsk Pomerania, was one of the most outstanding historians of the region in the 17th century. He is the author of the history of his monastery and order as well as a number of studies on the history of the Church in the region and in Poland. His collection included a large number of transcriptions of medieval documents that were deposited in the Carthusian archives or nearby monasteries (the Premonstratensian monastery in Żukowo, Cistercian monasteries in Oliwa and Pelplin, etc.). Due to his close ties with the Oliwa monastery, most of Schwengel's materials are related to the Cistercians and their monasteries founded both in Poland and in the areas bordering the Kingdom of Poland since the Middle Ages. He knew and often quoted medieval Cistercian chroniclers. The value of Schwengel's materials is difficult to overestimate, most of them are simple transcriptions of Cistercian documents, especially copies of documents from the 15th century.
