Abstract

The article, written by an unknown author, deals with an important aspect of research on medieval itineraries, i.e. the journeys of bishops. The text expresses the need to explore the journeys of clergy in the context of their functions in both the structure of the Church and the state. The author focuses particularly on the travels of Jan Grotowic, bishop of Krakow, in the years 1326-1347. The first aspect that should be emphasized is the solid source base of the article. The author uses a variety of documents, including over 40 issued by the Grotowica law firm, and narrative sources, such as Jan Długosz's Lives of the Krakow Bishops and his Roczniki. This diversity of sources allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the bishop's journey. The author analyzes the motives behind Grotowic's journey and the places where he stopped during his tours around the Krakow diocese. It also presents a map of his whereabouts, which adds substantive value to the article. Unfortunately, the text is not signed by a specific author, which makes its possible correction and source verification difficult. There is also no in-depth analysis of Bishop Grotowic himself and his role in the history of the Polish Church and state, which could enrich the content of the article. To sum up, the article is an interesting contribution to research on the journeys of clergy in the Middle Ages, especially Bishop Jan Grotowic. A solid source base and an attempt to understand the motives and goals of these journeys make the text a valuable read for historians dealing with this historical period.
