The research about Józef Koffler's (1896-1944) biography was initiated more than 30 years ago, yet some questions still remain unresolved. One of the most important issues is Koffler's national and religious identification. Koffler is usually seen as a Polish composer of Jewish descent. The author shows new facts of Koffler's biography, his compositional and journalistic activities. The most important research questions refer to Koffler's identity and whether it is possible to unequivocally state it. The author shows an unknown archive document – a certificate of baptism. Koffler's identification is discussed in the context of Polish-Jewish issues in the musical and academic life of the interwar Poland, and Lwów in particular. The second important archive document is Koffler's letter to Prince Lubomirski, written in Lwów during the German occupation, which is also published and discussed for the first time.
