The article focuses on presenting the prophetic form of proclaiming God’s word in the form of a symbolic activity. It begins with a general presentation of symbolic activities in the religious and social culture of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan. This is followed by a general indication of the presence of symbolic actions in the biblical texts of the Pentateuch and the books of the Prophets. The pericope from the book of Jeremiah, where God calls the prophet of Anatoth to make his personal and communal life God’s word to the chosen people, was chosen as an example of a detailed presentation of the prophetic preaching of God’s message by means of gripping and unambiguous symbolic actions. The theological message conveyed by Jeremiah’s symbolic life shows the dramatic punishment for the Israeli people who broke their covenant with God.
