Does Jesus really command hatred? The meaning of the verb μισέω in Lk 14:26

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to clarify: what does μισέω used by Luke in Lk 14:26 mean? A lexical analysis of the verb μισέω in the New Testament and the LXX, and an analysis of the Hebrew equivalents of the verb μισέω from the LXX in the Hebrew Bible shows that μισέω has a wide semantic field and means more than just 'hate'. An analysis of the context of the verb μισέω in v. 14:26 reveals the meaning Luke gives to it and the necessary attitude Jesus calls those who want to be his disciples to have toward their loved ones and themselves. I have suggested an alternative translation of this verb in Luke 14:26: “If anyone comes to Me, and is not completely free inwardly in relation to his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, moreover, and himself, he cannot be My disciple”.
