The Bible, and particularly the Book of Leviticus, conveys provisions concerning the Sabbath Year and the Jubilee Year. They relate to the Jewish institution of the Sabbath, which, by God’s will, became a holy day. Thus, the Sabbath Year and the Jubilee Year alike is a special holy time. The Jubilee Year is associated with certain benefits. The most frequently discussed are the remission of debts and the release of debtors, as well as the rest of the land. However, the most important is the gift of God’s blessing, without which the Jubilee Year could not be fulfilled. This special blessing from God enabled all members of the chosen people to renew their bond with Yahweh and reinforced their hope for God’s help. Christianity adopted this understanding of the Jubilee Year – the Holy Year, which is treated as a special time of grace.
