The Lithuanian province of the Congregation of the Mission (1794-1842)

Abstract

The Congregation of the Mission came to Poland from France in November 1651, while the Reverend Founder was still alive. They were brought to Warsaw by Queen Louise Maria Gonzaga, wife of John Casimir. The Bishop of Vilnius, Jerzy Tyszkiewicz (1649-1656), intended to bring missionaries to Vilnius to educate the clergy. For the future development of the Congregation, a very important facility was the parish of St. Cross in Warsaw, which the Bishop of Poznań, Kazimierz Florian Czartoryski, gave to the missionaries in 1653. The central house of the Polish province, established in 1685, was established here. From here, missionaries spread to the lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The earliest, in 1685, they arrived in Vilnius and Krakow. They were brought to Vilnius by the Bishop of Vilnius, Aleksander Kotowicz. The founder entrusted the missionaries with running a diocesan seminary and retreats for priests. From then on, these three houses - Warsaw, Vilnius and Krakow, became the main centers of missionary activity on Polish lands. They had their own seminaries educating missionary seminarians.
