Vicars of the Krakow cathedral in the 13th and 14th centuries

Abstract

This article is a shortened version of a more developed work by the same author, entitled List of vicars of the Krakow cathedral in the 13th and 14th centuries (the typed text is in the deposit of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Krakow). Drawing on documents from carefully prepared sources, the author collected information about 144 vicars of the Krakow cathedral who performed their functions there in the 13th and 14th centuries. Vicars were then a group of potential beneficiaries of diocesan prebends. These were primarily prebends that were under the patronage of the Krakow Cathedral Chapter, e.g. 25 parishes. Thanks to their education, vicars were allowed to function and serve in the Krakow curia, in the offices of papal tithe collectors, in the judiciary and in education. Nevertheless, the first duty of the vicars was priestly service in the cathedral. With their presence, they brought splendor, which was very important at that time, to church ceremonies. The vicars also took care of the rich collections of the Cathedral Treasury. Information about vicars gives us in-depth knowledge about the origins, education and role of the Polish elite in the 13th and 14th centuries.
