The evolution of the legal status of the Pentecostal Church in Poland and its predecessor institutions

Abstract

The Pentecostal movement, which began in the early 20th century in the US, developed very dynamically both in America and on other continents, including Europe, where it arrived in 1907. The first Pentecostal denomination in Poland was legalized on August 15, 1910, in Cieszyn as the Union for Resolute Christianity and brought together local communities operating in Cieszyn Silesia. The second strand of Polish Pentecostalism was the multinational Union of Christians of the Evangelical Faith, operating without legal status since May 22, 1929, bringing together congregations from the Eastern Borderlands, Central Poland, and Pomerania.

During World War II, the German occupation authorities banned Pentecostals from organizing services. In 1942, the leaders of the ZChWE established contact with the Methodist Church as a legally recognized and active religious association in the General Governorship. The Church provided organizational and legal support to Pentecostal communities operating in the vicinity of Przemyśl and Lviv, in the region of the former provinces of Lviv, Stanislav, and Tarnopol, guaranteeing them autonomy in organizing congregations, conducting services, and maintaining their own organizational structures.

After the end of World War II, Evangelical churches (including Pentecostals) attempted to form church unions. During a convention held on May 24–26, 1947, in Ustroń, three denominations: the Union for Resolute Christianity (Pentecostals), the Union of Evangelical Christians, and the Union of Free Christians established the United Evangelical Church (ZKE). In 1953, the state authorities led to the enlargement of the ZKE by two more communities: the Church of Christians of Evangelical Faith, representing Pentecostal Christianity, and the Union of Churches of Christ. Legal recognition did not come until July 31, 1959, after the state authorities approved the Statute and entered the ZKE in the Register of Religious Associations and Unions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. On May 22, 1987, the 12th Synod of the Church adopted a resolution to reorganize the United Evangelical Church in the People’s Republic of Poland by granting independence to its constituent denominations.

Many years of harmonious cooperation between the two branches of Polish Pentecostalism, the Union of Resolute Christians and the Church of Christians of Evangelical Faith, resulted in a decision to unite in a single church organization under the name Pentecostal Church. On the basis of the decision of the Department for Religious Affairs on February 1, 1988, the Pentecostal Church was entered in the register of religious associations and unions under number 31. In 1995, the Church submitted a draft law on the relationship between the State and the Pentecostal Church in the Republic of Poland to the Lower House of Parliament of the Republic of Poland. The law was passed on February 20, 1997.
