At the beginning of the 20th century, a major social problem in the Przemyśl diocese was the plague of drunkenness. To combat this addiction, the Church undertook numerous pastoral initiatives. The issue of educating for sobriety was also addressed at three diocesan synods organized by Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar in 1902 and 1908 in Przemyśl, and in 1914 in Chyrów. The Temperance Brotherhood, reformed in 1908, played a special role in promoting abstinence and was mandated to operate in every parish. Addressing the issue of drunkenness was considered a pressing need, and the healing of Polish society depended on it.
