The second half of the thirteenth century it is the time of struggle between the rulers of Bohemia and Hungary to gain influence in the Polish lands and to win the Piast Dukes in the face of the ongoing Bohemian-Hungarian conflict for the inheritance of the Austrian Babenbergs. The then King of Bohemia, Przemysł Otakar II, wanted to gain as an ally the ruler of Krakow, Bolesław the Chaste, who was married to one of the daughters of the Hungarian king Bela IV – Kinga. What was also important for the rulers of Bohemia and Hungary was the attitude of Leszek the Black, elected by Bolesław the Chaste as a heir to the Duke of Łęczyca, who was married to a princess from the Hungarian Arpad dynasty – Gryfina.
In this text I will try to look at the activities of Princess Gryfina in the context of Polish-Hungarian and Polish-Bohemian relations in the face of the fights and conflicts taking place on the international arena between Hungary and the Bohemia. The main goal of the article will be to present Princess Gryfina, a descendant of the Hungarian Arpads and the Ruthenian Ruriks, as a woman who influenced the development of Polish-Hungarian and Polish-Bohemian relations in the second half of the 13th century. It will be also important to indicate the motives that led her to take certian actions.
