This article presents the Annunciation of Mary (Lk 1:26–38) as a paradigm of vocation to consecrated life in the light of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s thought. The specificity of the call to the exclusive love of Christ and service to Him in the Church by the evangelical counsels can be understood more deeply in relation to the Annunciation. A vocation to the consecrated life arises from the initiative of God alone and is a gift of His infinite love; is a positive response to God’s invitation to free oneself from the limitations of one’s own will, from ideas of self-fulfilment, from disordered tendencies, in order to immerse oneself in the will of God and let oneself be led by it. Benedict XVI encourages consecrated persons to go back, like Mary who vividly remembers the event of the Annunciation, to that decisive event in their lives, to remember their “first love,” the essential beginning of their way of life totally dedicated to God. The life of those devoted to God must be permeated by faith and fidelity to God, according to the “yes” they have said to Him. The event of the Annunciation of Mary can be a model, a type in discerning a vocation to consecrated life.
