This article discusses the modification of the Roman Missal, the Introduction to the Roman Missal, and the Rites of Holy Mass following the reform of minor orders in 1972. The current ministries of lector and acolyte have taken over the former functions of the subdeacon (and sometimes also the deacon). This article aims to show how this came about, outlining the historical evolution of liturgical law with regard to these ministries in order to better understand their role in the current liturgy. For this reason, the text of the publication has been divided into three thematic parts, reflecting, in turn: the activities of lower clergy before the reform of minor orders, the modification of rubrics after the reform of minor orders, and the development of law after the publication of the Roman Missal in 1975.
