Abstract

The date of death of Jordan - the first bishop in Poland, considered certain by historians, marked 1984 as the next (third) millennium of the Church in Poland. Although Jordan is the forefather of the entire Polish episcopate, the celebrations of the next millennium were quite modest. However, it became an opportunity to organize a two-day nationwide scientific conference in Poznań (November 23-24, 1984). It was organized by the Theological Commission of the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences, which has been bringing together the theological community in Greater Poland, including Church historians, for over seventy years. Thanks to her cooperation with the Historical Commission of the same Society, it was possible to give the Conference the character of a very competent meeting of medievalists representing several main centers of this discipline in Poland. The organizers' intention was to present not only the figure of Bishop Jordan and his activities, but also to present as fully as possible this historical period in which the roots of the Polish state, the Church in Poland and Polish culture lie. Therefore, the general theme of the conference was: "The beginnings of Christian culture in Poland in the 10th century."
