The musical activity of Fr. Teofil Górnicki (1890–1971): A contribution to research

Abstract

Church documents clearly emphasize that music in the liturgy is meant to serve the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful. It can also become a passion in life and an important element in a person’s formation. It seems that music played precisely such a role in the life of Fr. Teofil Górnicki (1890-1971), a priest first of the Diocese of Przemyśl and later of the Diocese of Tarnów. For over 40 years, Fr. Górnicki was associated with the Parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gorlice, as well as with the town itself. In Gorlice, he worked as a pastor, catechist, youth educator, singing teacher, and conductor. This article attempts to present the musical activity of Fr. Teofil Górnicki, primarily as a musician, composer, and author of arrangements of Mass cycles, hymns, carols, and psalms. These works were intended both for unison singing by the faithful and as arrangements for mixed or male choir. The article also outlines his activity as a conductor and choirmaster. The author managed to locate twelve of his compositions and arrangements, which are briefly discussed in the article. Several of them have survived in their original notation. It can be confidently stated that Fr. T. Górnicki’s work in the field of church music reflects a broader concern for the musical culture of the Church.
