The work presented here is part of a wider project to provide a Polish translation of the twenty-seven sermons that Richard of St Victor (died 1173), one of the most important representatives of the school of St Victor, included in the tenth book of the second part of his important encyclopaedic work Liber exceptionum (1153–1159/1162). Translations of nineteen of these sermons have already been compiled and published in various places. Translations of a further four sermons, namely XII, XIII, XIV and XV, which are excellent examples of Victorinian exegesis, are hereby submitted. The sermons in question are commentaries on short phrases of the Bible: sermon XII – on Ezra 36:8, sermon XIII – on Ps 98(97):1, sermon XIV – on Ps 132(131):9, and finally sermon XV – on Matt 20:4. They are tropological commentaries, that is, commentaries in which specific postulates relating to the practice of Christian life are derived from particular words of Scripture. The translation is preceded by a word of introduction and accompanied by dozens of footnotes, which provide what may help in its deeper reception. At the same time, a Latin textual version of Richard’s sermons in question has been reprinted here.
