The period of the Second Polish Republic was a special time in the history of Poland, when the nation, reborn after a period of partition, made an effort to shape the system and structures of public administration and Polish legislation. A special area of legal regulations was the development of the legal framework regarding relations with the Holy See and national legislation relating to the same persons – citizens and faithful of the Catholic Church. Important common issues included regulating the financial support of the Catholic Church by the state and the lay faithful. The main subject of the study is the analysis of legal provisions concerning the legal status of the patron (church guardian) and his rights and obligations in the light of the legal regulations in force in the period under examination, including the transitional period of the law of the occupying states and national law. The article also draws attention to the significance of the analyzed institution of patronage, which is confirmed by the case law of the Supreme Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court as well as the parliamentary debate on the regulation of this right by the Sejm.
