Abstract

The history o f Sandomierz is inseparable from the three hundred year history of the local Benedictine foundation w hich dates back to 1615. So far no full-length monograph covering both the church's history and its architectural and artistic treasures has been written. Yet there is no dearth o f original sources that could be used for that purpose. T hey can be found in the Archives of the Diocesan Seminary at Sandomierz, the Archives of the Benedictine Nuns at Lomza and the State Archives at Sandomierz. The first part of this article d eals w ith the foundation, construction and furnishings o f the church until its consecration in 1693. The second part concentrates on the furnishings in the 18th and 19th century. Maintenance and urgent renovation work as well as the construction of the bell tower are covered in Part Three. The fourth part takes a closer look at the liturgical vessels and vestments, masterpieces of the art of goldsmithing and embroidery respectively. The inventories of 1762 and 1858 are reproduced in two appendices. At present St Michael’s Church belongs to the Diocesan Seminary at Sandomierz.
