Abstract

The creative invention of artists depicting contemporary portraits appears to be seriously limited. Portraits, often too literally based on photographic documentation, fail to convey either the inner life of the blessed or even the scope and character of their activities. Among the works of recent years, special attention is deserved by the painting of the beatification by Paweł Taranczewski, the Albertine Sister Lidia, and the portrait of St. Brother Albert painted by Irena Popiołek. It seems that the iconographic future of Blessed Brother Albert must capture not only the likeness but also portray the strength and attitude of this modern saint towards contemporary humanity.
