On September 21-23, 1987, the Second International Symposium on the role of the Cistercians in the culture of medieval Europe was held at the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno. The first International Symposium dedicated to the Cistercians was held on May 22-24, 1985 in Błażejewko near Poznań. The symposium was organized on the initiative of the Team for Research on the History and Culture of the Cistercians in Old Poland, which has existed for several years at the Institute of History of the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań, in cooperation with the Poznań Society of Friends of Sciences. It was attended by historians, art historians and archaeologists from all over the country, as well as scientists from Austria, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic and the German Federal Republic. Then, the Symposium participants took part in the opening of the exhibition - Cistercians in medieval Poland - culture and art. It was organized in the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno. Both in the papers and in the discussion, the enormous achievements of the Cistercian Order in medieval Poland and Europe were pointed out, among others, in the field of culture, especially architecture, art, writing and political thought, as well as the organization of work and economic ventures. An example of the impressive achievements of this order is the exhibition "Cistercians in medieval Poland - culture and art" opened on the first day of the meeting - September 21 - which collects the most valuable monuments of Cistercian spiritual and material culture preserved in our country from the period from the 12th to the 15th century. Back to Poznań, the symposium participants also visited the Museum of the First Piasts in Ostrów Lednicki.
