Abstract

The establishment of the parish in Zakopane in 1847 was preceded by more than half a century of intentions and efforts. The decision matured and was lost several times at various official levels in the extremely changeable political conditions of the late 18th and first half of the 19th century. If the matter had been left solely to the Lviv Governorate or the Tarnów Consistory, it would probably not have been worth presenting the bureaucratic procedure and lengthy decisions. However, since the issue of obtaining their own parish church was of great concern to the highlanders, but the desire for their own priest and church was hampered by fear of unbearable costs, it is worth taking a look at a little-known fragment of the social history of a Podhale village.
