Abstract

The work concerns the history of Upper Orava in the context of Catholicism and spiritual activity in this area in the 17th century. The text describes the importance of historical documents, especially the protocol of the visitation from 1656, carried out by the priest Frydman and vice-archdeacon Jan Ratułowski at the request of the Spiš provost, Bishop Waradyn, Jan Palfalvay. Ratułowski, describing the situation in Orawka, lists in detail the church equipment, pastoral activities, living conditions of the people and efforts in the field of religious and social renewal, as well as difficulties related to maintaining the parish, which were overcome thanks to the conscientiousness and determination of the clergy. Worth emphasizing are the activities of Polish priests for the Catholic renovation of Upper Orava, their involvement in building churches, organizing pastoral care and helping the local community, despite the difficulties related to the prevailing Lutheranism and lack of material resources.
