Saint Catherine of Siena was a Dominican tertiary, a virgin. She contributed to the reform of the Church; she made the Pope aware of his mistake, so that he returned from Avignon to Rome. She wrote hundreds of letters to the Clergy, politicians, and others, for the peace and welfare of the Church. Her persuasion of Pope Gregory XI to return from Avignon to Rome has a symbolic, timeless meaning, namely, the Church endures because of her immutability; this is what the Church needed then to return to an eternal tradition, this is what the Church needs today to return to her roots.
