The postconciliar popes unanimously admit that in man’s relation to God, the most essential thing is prayer - in the case of Mary it is the Magnificat canticle. For John Paul II, it is “an inspired profession of her faith”. Benedict XVI calls it “a portrait (…) of her soul”. Pope Francis, on the other hand, sees in it a “revolutionary prayer”, which is also “like a ‘photograph’ of the Mother of God”. This article is an attempt to interpret this Marian song according to the current pope. The reflections submitted in it follow the suggestion of Pope Bergoglio. It characterizes the Magnificat and brings out theological content from it, while sketching Mary's spirituality. He sees in it a prayer of joy, a prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God, as well as its prophetic message. The revolutionary nature of the Canticle lies mainly in the fact that it introduces us to Jesus' “Beatitudes, the primordial synthesis and law of the Gospel message’.
