The article analyses the lexeme черт (devil) in a historical, linguistic, cultural, semantic and pragmatic way: the main characteristics and features of its use, primarily in stable combinations, phraseological units – in Slavic and Baltic (Lithuanian, Latvian) languages. The etymology, semantic features, functional and pragmatic characteristics of such idioms once again prove the fact of the cultural and linguistic unit of the Baltic and Slavic ethnos in the most ancient period of the Balto-Slavic coexistence. It is thanks to the Baltic languages that today it is possible to “reveal” to some extent the etymology and specifics of the internal form, the basis of the metaphorical model of phraseological units with a component черт in modern Slavic languages, some specific examples of which are given in the proposed study.
