The propagandistic image of Poles and Jews in the “Krakauer Zeitung” 1939–1945

Abstract

This article examines the representation of Poles and Jews in the “Krakauer Zeitung,” a German-language newspaper published by the Nazi occupation authorities in the General Government between 1939 and 1945. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the main linguistic strategies through which the newspaper created enemy images, shaped social perception, and legitimized the occupation policy of the Third Reich. The material consists of selected press articles as well as the labels, metaphors, and stereotypical characterizations used to describe Poles and Jews. Methodologically, the article adopts a historical-linguistic and discourse-analytical approach, interpreting press language within the broader political and ideological framework of National Socialism. The analysis demonstrates that Poles were primarily portrayed as chaotic, criminal, inferior, and threatening, while Jews were systematically dehumanized, demonized, and represented through biological and criminalizing metaphors. The study concludes that the “Krakauer Zeitung” functioned not merely as a source of information, but as an instrument of ideological domination, social manipulation, and Nazi information warfare.
