Abstract

In the Middle Ages, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Miechowites, established a network of monasteries, parishes and hospitals under the direct control of the Miechów monastery. The main centre of these institutions in the Przemyśl region was the monastery in the western part of Przeworsk. The monastery soon became the centre of the parish and religious life of the people of Przeworsk and the neighbouring villages, as the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, according to its rules, was especially prepared for pastoral, charitable and educational work. They were also involved in spreading the cult of the Holy Sepulchre, the Passion of Christ and the Resurrection, promoting a number of liturgical customs connected with the celebration of Holy Week. This article focuses on the first two of these elements of the Equestrian Order's activities, the pastoral and charitable activities, which were expressed in the creation and running of religious confraternities attached to the parish and the running of a hospital.
