Among other things, the records of the ecclesiastical courts give us an insight into the customs of Polish society - and, most importantly, broaden our knowledge of crimes related to violations of the law of marriage. The article looks in particular at the most common of these, known as adultery. Adulterous men often appear in court records. They are accused not only of breaking the rules of marital fidelity, but also of keeping a mistress in the house and, in extreme cases, of abusing their wives.
